Bruxism is an exaggerated clenching or grinding action of the teeth which is not part of your normal chewing function. It may lead to excessive wear on the teeth, damage to the jaw joints and surrounding muscles. The word bruxism comes from the Greek word 'brychein', which means to gnash the teeth.Clenching means tightly clamping your top and bottom teeth together, especially the back teeth and grinding is when you slide your teeth over each other, generally in a sideways, back-and-forth movement. As you are forcing on the jaw movements, your teeth get rubbed. The force of clenching and grinding causes pressure on the muscles, tissues and other structures of jaw and your teeth gets damaged.
